On Sunday the 30th of September, I was invited out with some friends to go to the pre-party for the World of Film Festival in Glasgow. The night would consist of a series of short films followed by music, and I was intrigued.

Arriving a little on the late side in the downstairs space of Nice 'n Sleazy's, I was greeted with a dark, gritty film that had a vague narrative and dull tones, which failed to catch my attention. It didn't help that somebody was sitting directly in front of me in such a way that I was unable to read the subtitles.
The next film wasn't much different. Neither was the next one, the one after that, nor the final one. Apart from two short animations, the tone in most of the films was gritty, grey and dull. There wasn't much shift in genre either, except for the animations.
The animations were very short, and acted as breaks between the monotonous films that they were placed between, but couldn't hide the fact the films were simply that monotonous. The group that I was with agreed that it wasn't the best curation.
It made me realise, however, in relation to my own work, that I did want to avoid the monotonous, grey films that seemed to be so popular that night. I like the bright colour that the animation had, and it made them stand out so much more.
Sometimes, a night of bad film makes you realise what not to do.
